Coaching
The top 3 reasons people ask for help with their triathlon training, in the form of coaching:
1. A structured and periodised plan created to take account of their individual requirements
2. Specific improvement in swimming, cycling and/ or running
3. Accountability and/ or motivation
1. Many triathletes want to engage someone qualified and knowledgable to put together an individual periodised plan, ensuring they are completing the right type and intensity of training in a progressive way towards their race goals. If you opt to follow a generic plan from a book, magazine or one of the plethora of triathlon plans you'll find online, you may find it's not optimal training for you as an individual in terms of investment in time, energy and cost. Not to mention improvement - one size doesn't fit all!
2. Triathletes know what they like to do in training, particularly if they have a stronger discipline. Left to their own devices, many of them will complete 'biased' training and find it challenging to prioritise their less favoured areas for improvement. A coach can provide structure in their training patterns, and lend insight in how to adopt a balanced approach to develop you as an all-round athlete. An added benefit to this is that triathletes generally find this helps them to manage and prevent injuries long term.
3. Having a coach or someone independently setting your training means you will be more committed to the process and outcomes. You'll benefit from knowing you have someone monitoring your progress, encouraging you and keeping you motivated towards your goals. If you're going to set out to achieve anything worthwhile, the best path to success is to commit to it fully.
